Alayna climbed the back of the couch again this morning. Then a kitchen chair. Then me, while I was holding a warm Diet Coke I was actually hoping to drink.
She is going to climb. That part is not up for debate. The only real question is whether she climbs the furniture or something built for it.
So here is my confession: I do not own the thing I am about to tell you about. It has been sitting in my cart for over a month. I add it, I look at the price, I close the tab. Two days later I open it again. You know the dance.
The thing is a Pikler-style climbing set. A little wooden triangle, an arch, a ramp that flips over into a slide, and a cushion. The whole Montessori “just let them climb” idea, folded into one piece.
Here is why I keep coming back to it.
She climbs everything anyway. Giving her something actually made for it feels less like buying a toy and more like buying back my nerves.
It is for the indoor days. The rainy ones, and the sick days when leaving the house just is not happening. A way to burn the energy without leaving the living room.
It is not another plastic thing that dies in a month. I am tired of toys that light up, play a song twice, and get ignored by Friday. This is wood. No batteries. Nothing to break or charge.
It folds. We do not have a playroom. We have a living room that also has to stay a living room. The fact that this one folds flat against a wall is honestly most of why it is this set and not the others.
And here is the part I actually wrestle with: it is not $14. It is a real-money toy, the kind that makes me close the tab and feel a little guilty for even looking. But I keep running the math the other way. One thing that grows with her from about one to three, against the pile of little stuff that gets played with once. Spread across two years, the big number starts to look a lot smaller.
I think I am finally going to buy it. If you have had it in your cart too, doing the same in-and-out dance, this is the one I landed on: the 4-in-1 folding climbing set. It folds, it grows with them, and it is the rare toddler thing that does not look like a fire truck threw up in your living room.
If I get it and it flops, I will come back and tell you. That is the deal here. But I really do not think I am wrong about this one.
