My front porch was where good intentions went to die. A plastic chair the last tenant left behind, and a welcome mat that mostly just confirmed the dirt was welcome too. For about a year I walked past it twice a day and felt a little worse each time.
So here’s the budget porch refresh I pulled off for $40 in one nap-time. Not a renovation. Just the one corner I actually sit in, made not depressing.
Here’s the thing about being a single mom on one income: the porch is never going to be the priority. So I gave myself $40 and one rule. Make it somewhere that’s mine after she’s down for the night.
Two free moves first. Before you buy anything, sweep it and move what’s already there. I pulled the chair to the corner and swept a winter’s worth of pollen off the rail, and it already looked like someone lived there on purpose. Then I grabbed a faded doormat off the clearance rack for almost nothing. Free or close to it, and half the job done.
Warm-white string lights (~$13). The biggest change for the least money. I ran them along the railing with the little clips they came with. The cheap dollar-store ones glow blue and sad, so spend the extra couple dollars for the warm white. At dusk the whole corner goes gold and forgives a lot of peeling paint.
Flameless candles on a timer (~$16). They turn themselves on at the same time every night and off after six hours. I have enough things to remember. This isn’t one of them anymore, and I don’t have to think about a real flame with a toddler around.
Two outdoor throw pillows (~$11 for the pair). Clearance end-cap at the grocery store, of all places, so there’s no link for these. But that’s the tip. Raid the summer end-caps in July when stores start dumping the season. Faded terracotta, a little weatherproof, exactly right.
That’s $40. The plastic chair stayed. I just made it look like it was on purpose.
I sat out there last night after bedtime. First time in a long while the porch felt like somewhere, instead of one more thing I was failing at.
