A Cabin Weekend for Under $200

I needed to get out of the house. Not a vacation, I can’t afford a vacation. Just somewhere that wasn’t the same four walls and the same pile of laundry. So I figured out how to do a cheap cabin weekend, the whole thing for under $200, because for a single mom the getaway lives and dies by the math.

Here’s how it broke down.

What Cost
Cabin (off-night) ~$90
Groceries ~$40
Gas ~$30
Portable sound machine ~$20
Total ~$180

Book the off-season, or at least the off-night. The same little cabin that’s booked solid and pricey on a summer Saturday sits empty and cheap on a Sunday or a shoulder-season weekend. I paid about $90 for the night. Search the weeknights and the in-between weeks. The view doesn’t know what day it is.

Bring the groceries. The fastest way to blow the budget is eating out for every meal with a toddler who takes three bites and declares war. I packed a bag of food from home and made simple stuff in the cabin kitchen. Call it $40, most of which we’d have eaten anyway.

Keep the rest free. Gas was about $30. The hike we did was free. The creek Alayna threw rocks into for an hour was free, and honestly the whole point.

One thing worth packing if your kid sleeps badly in new places:

A small portable sound machine (~$20). Strange room, strange noises. A toddler who suddenly forgets how to sleep. This one runs on a battery, fits in the diaper bag, and bought me an actual evening to sit on the porch by myself.

Under two hundred, and the first weekend in a long while I came home feeling like a person instead of a to-do list.

If you want more single-mom-budget moves like this, I send a short list most weeks, usually under $30 a find. No spam, just what I actually use.
