Road-Tripping with a Toddler

Three hours in the car with a toddler taught me one thing they leave out of the parenting books. Snacks are currency. And you will run out.

We left at what I thought was the perfect time, right at nap. Alayna slept for eleven glorious minutes, woke up furious that the car was still moving, and spent the next stretch making it everyone’s problem. By everyone, I mean me. It was just us.

I have a system now. It took a few trips to build, mostly through failure. Snacks rationed like I’m running a tiny, sticky economy. One toy introduced at a time, like courses at a fancy dinner, except the dinner is a $3 plastic farm animal and the guest keeps throwing it on the floor and screaming for it back. We repeat that roughly forty times. It is, somehow, the activity.

There’s a stretch of any drive where it all falls apart. Yours will come. Mine hit somewhere past the halfway point, when the snacks were gone and the toy was wedged under the seat where neither of us could reach it. I pulled into a gas station, bought a Red Bull and a Diet Coke I did not need, and stood in the lot for a minute letting her stretch her legs and me catch my breath.

Then came the part that never fits on a postcard. She fell asleep ten minutes from home. Of course she did. I drove that last stretch slow, the way you do when the quiet is finally yours and you’re not ready to trade it for the unbuckling and the carrying-in.

We made it. We always make it. I just can’t recommend the nap-time departure. Learn from me.
